In the new book “Game Change” authored by Mark Halperin of Time Magazine, quoted Harry Reid speaking his heart when he said that Barack Obama was “light skinned” and had “no negro dialect,” as the 2008 primary campaign for president began to unfold.
Joe Biden, made a similar statement during the 2008 primary as he started his campaign. When asked about Barack Obama and his run for the presidency, he said, “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.” So much for Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. They need to work on their appearance and hire a speech coach according to these high ranking white democrats.
There is no telling what kind of firestorm there would have been if a white republican made the same statement about a black opponent.
Harry Reid remained silent in the ’08 primary about who he wanted to see win the nomination. With Hillary Clinton and Obama both front runners he chose not to take sides until the primary was over.
This brings us to the present where Harry Reid finds himself in a precarious situation with his electorate back in Nevada. Right now he only has a 33% approval rating from his constituency. He could very well go from the majority leader of the Senate to not having an office at all after the 2010 election.
He profusely apologized to Obama hoping that would endear him tothe voters back home. Obama apparently has no hard feelings as he has sent many from his administration to Nevada to bolster Reid’s falling popularity. The effect may not help Reid in the long run.
Sue Lowden, Reid’s Republican opponent, is leading him by 10 points. Half of all Nevada citizens have a unfavorable opinion of Harry Reid. 33% still hold him in a favorable light.
