More Than 70 Million Doses of H1N1 Vaccine May Have to Be Discarded

by admin on April 1, 2010

A story from Fox News claims that 70 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine will have to be trashed upon expiration.

Our government would not have this problem if health care had been passed earlier.  The government under the health reform act could have mandated that every human being in the the new Obama health care reform law  receive shots.  Not only demand that each person partake of the shot, but prove to the government via paperwork that you received the shot.

The way things are beginning to shake out, the government could very well charge you with insubordination if you were not to take the required shot.

The WP story by Rob Stein had this excerpt from his post about the wasted doses….

Despite months of dire warnings and millions in taxpayer dollars, less than half of the 229 million doses of H1N1 vaccine the government bought to fight the pandemic have been administered — leaving an estimated 71.5 million doses that must be discarded if they are not used before they expire.

Between 81 million and 91 million doses of swine flu vaccine were injected into peoples’ arms or squirted up their noses through the end of February, according to federal officials, leaving about 138 million doses unused. An estimated 60 million of those will be donated to poor countries or saved for possible future use. But doses already in vials and syringes will be thrown away if not used before their expiration dates pass.

Here is the kicker to this story.  The government paid $1.6 billion dollars for this program for 229 million doses. 70 million doses will be trashed at an average cost of $6.98 each which will come to approximately $489 million dollars the government will flush down the drain after it is all said and done.

This is just a microcosm of the government and its inability to run a program without losing taxpayer money.  Picture this as health care reform and what it is going to look like in the future.
