Obama believes he can set up a commission for an unpopular subject like tax increases accross the board on all taxpayers and not be blamed for raising taxes because this is what his commission suggested doing in order to tackle the yearly deficits and the national debt.
Obama is quoted in this NY Times article…
Mr. Obama met privately with the commission members at the White House before their meeting at an executive office building across the street. In the Rose Garden afterward, he told reporters that he had insisted that everything be on the negotiating table. That admonition, he has acknowledged, also obliges him to be willing to set aside a campaign promise that all but the wealthiest 5 percent of Americans would not see their federal taxes rise in his term.
Without real spending controls, this debt commission is a moot point and a waste of time for all those involved. A commission, chosen by the President can’t help but be political. With that knowledge in hand, Americans know there is no hope that this commission will make any impact whatsoever on the fiscal problems our country faces.
Here is an excerpt from National Review online..
Of course, the commission itself is a transparent maneuver to pass the buck in an election year. Voters are beyond fed up with the massive spending spree taking place in Washington. To every hostile question Democratic candidates will get in coming months about the exploding national debt, they are therefore planning the following answer: We’re waiting for the commission to make its recommendations in December. Never mind that Democrats control the White House and Congress. If they wanted to cut the budget, they could certainly do so, starting right now. Instead, they will try to use the appointment of a non-binding commission to create the appearance of a proactive agenda.
Here is the real surprise for Congress that the taxpayers have in store for them. The taxpayers are through talking and they find there is no reason to listen to their elected representatives run off at the mouth that there is a “commission” that is going to solve the country’s fiscal problems. Voters are going to send these clowns home in November before they start implementing more tax increases.
Liberalism is a tall tale, told by an illusionist, using smoke and mirrors, that captivates and magnifies the ignorance of people into believing that the United States is the land of the free… lunch.
